  8. Some new info on the Escena site about changes to the card. Here's the info.

  13. Originally the design consisted of a central controller chip, which managed
  14. the CPU and memory control on one side and on the other it had a direct
  15. ZorroIII interface.
  16.  
  17. The specifications on CPU/memory side did not change. On the interface side
  18. the Zorro interface has been exchanged by a full-featured PCI
  19. Master/Slave(Target) interface.
  20.  
  21. So this device is comparable to a 'North Bridge' of a PC chip set, of course
  22. with respect to the PowerPC/Amiga environment.

  24. The Zorro interface now resides on an additional device, the PCI-Zorro
  25. Bridge. This interface also can operate in Master and Slave modes.
  26.  
  27. Since PCI is a low latency bus, this architecture does not incur significant
  28. performance decreases (compared to direct ZorroIII interface). This is
  29. being supported by on-chip buffers.

  31. Thus the bandwidth on the 32-bit, 33MHz PCI bus is estimated to reach 96
  32. MB/s.

  34. *Benefits*
  35. This quite basical change now offers two substantial advantages.
  36.  
  37. First, using a connector, it is now possible to attach a card with
  38. off-the-shelf PCI devices. Such devices feature for example SCSI, graphics
  39. and USB.
  40.  
  41. On a board being seated in a Zorro Slot, 'real' PCI slots cannot be provided
  42. due to mechanical reasons. But since it will only one connector it should
  43. be possible to mount more than one device onto one card. Which parts should
  44. be chosen for this will still remain to be decided.

  46. Second, the additional chip (the PCI-Zorro bridge) now offers the pin
  47. resources that missed before when considering a ZorroII implementation.
  48. Through the PCI interface that has been described above it will even make
  49. more sense to run a processor card in a ZorroII slot as before.

  51. By this, it should get feasible to run the Brainstormer card within an
  52. A2000. But due to the wide variety of A2000 accelerator boards it can not
  53. be estimated by now if compatibility issues (especially on DMA Transfers)
  54. can lead to occasional limitations.
